Badminton: Chong Wei Indonesian Open Champ
JAKARTA, June 27 (Bernama) -- World number one Datuk Lee Chong Wei won the Indonesian Open singles title after easily beating Taufik Hidayat from the host country in straight sets 21-19, 21-8 in 37 minutes.
Shouts of "yel-yel" by about 3,000 home supporters at the Istora Senayan stadium to urge Taufik on failed to break Chong Wei's spirit or disrupt his concentration to give his best.
Chong Wei said he had prepared himself mentally and physically for the tournament knowing that he would be playing before a raucous, partisan crowd.
The Malaysian said he did not expect to easily beat his opponent, Indonesia's number one singles shuttler, especially by a wide score margin in the second set.
However, he added, he could read Taufik's strategy from the first set.
"I worked my socks off to win the first game. Once I achieved that, I felt confident I would win the second," said Chong Wei, adding that he was happy with the win although it was not his best performance.
Taufik who was chasing a record seventh win at the Indonesian Open admitted that Chong Wei played well this time while his physical condition as not as good as that of the Malaysian.
"This physical up and down is normal in sports which can affect our performance...but then, we cannot be at the top all the time," he said.
