Badminton: Chong Wei On Track For Seventh Malaysian Open Title

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 22 (Bernama) -- Malaysia's Datuk Lee Chong Wei is within reach of his seventh Proton Malaysian Open title after he easily beat Chen Long of China in the semifinal at the Putra Stadium in Bukit Jalil here Saturday.

Chong Wei mauled the Chinese ace 21-9, 21-9 in just 39 minutes.

"I thought Chen Long would go all out to attack but he chose to be cautious. He also made a lot of mistakes," the world number one told reporters after the match.

Chong Wei who appeared calm and confident today also admitted that he had prepared himself to meet Lin Dan in the semifinal.

However, it was not to be as Lin Dan had to pull out from his quarterfinal match against Chen Long yesterday because of an abdominal injury.

Chong Wei will meet Indonesia's Taufik Hidayat in the final tomorrow. Taufik had defeated compatriot Simon Santoso 21-15, 21-19 in the other semifinal match.

Taufik, when approached by reporters, said though he had often lost to Chong Wei in the past, he was confident that he could "turn the tables" on the Malaysian tomorrow.

Out of the 16 encounters the two have had previously, Chong Wei has won 10 of them.

The women's singles final will be an all-Chinese affair between Wang Yihan Wang Shixian.

The women's doubles and mixed doubles finals are also all-Chinese affairs.

In the women's doubles, Wang Xioli/Yu Yang will face Tian Qing/Zhao Yunlei while in mixed doubles, He Hanbin/Ma Jin will do battle with Jiaming Tao/Tian Qing.

However, the Danish pair of Mads Conrads-Petersen/Jonas Rasmussen saved the day from an all-Chinese final in the men's doubles.

The duo, who only paired up in October last year, beat another new rising pair from Japan Naoki Kawamae/Shoji Sato 21-17, 22-20 in their semifinal match today.

"It was a big match for us today and so too for the Japanese. But I guess we managed to overcome our nerves first and win the first set.

"In the second set the Japanese forced us to make mistakes, fortunately we played well and won the second set as well. We are now looking forward to lifting our first Super Series title," Rasmussen told reporters.

Tomorrow they will meet scratch pair Chai Biao/Guo Zhendong of China who beat Mohamad Ahsan/Bona Septano of Indonesia 21-15, 21-14 in the other semifinal match.
