Badminton: Chong Wei Out For Taufik's Scalp In Final After Beating Kuncoro
JAKARTA, June 26 (Bernama) -- World number one and Malaysia's top shuttler Datuk Lee Chong Wei set up a mouth-watering Indonesian Open men's singles final against Taufik Hidayat, after beating another Indonesian Sony Dwi Kuncoro in their semi-final match at Istora Senayan here Saturday.
The 21-13, 21-9 win over the Indonesian today was all the more sweet for Chong Wei, the defending champion, who had lost to Kuncoro in the Singapore Open quarter-finals last week.
Chong Wei's clash against Taufik, winner of the Indonesian Open six times before, was certainly the tie many Indonesian badminton fans had waited for since both had also met in the final last year.
Just like Chong Wei, Taufik also had an easy outing against Vietnam's Nguyen Tien Minh, winning 21-17, 21-12, to book his berth in the semi-finals.
"I did not expect an easy match today. Maybe Sony was not at his best today," said Chong Wei after his match.
As for his opponent tomorrow, Chong Wei said since Taufik loves to play an attacking game, he would have to beef up his defence.
"I hope I can put up a good performance tomorrow to defend my title," he said.
Taufik, meanwhile, had earlier said that he would try to set a new record by winning the title for the seventh time and surpass the previous record of six victories that he jointly shares with another Indonesian great, Ardy Wiranata.
"I will have to strengthen my mental to overcome the pressure when facing Chong Wei because he is in great form, especially after winning the Korean Open, Malaysian Open and All England this year," he said.
