Badminton: Hee Chun And Wee Kiong Score A Major Upset

JOHOR BAHARU, July 9 (Bernama) -- National unseeded pair Mak Hee Chun/Tan Wee Kiong caused a major upset when they defeated Malaysia's top doubles pair Koo Kien Keat/Tan Boon Heong 21-19, 21-19 in 40 minutes en route to the men's double semifinals of the Yonex-Sunrise Malaysia Open Grand Prix Gold 2010 Friday night.

They are set to meet unseeded Indonesian pair Hendra Aprida Gunawan/Alvent Yulianto Chandra who won over sixth seeded Malaysian pair Gan Teik Chai/Tan Bin Shen in 21-6 16-5 (retired).

Eighth seeded Hong Kong pair Yohan Hadikusumo Wiratama/Wong Wai Hong won in 10-21, 21-11, 21-16 against unseeded Angga Pratama/Rian Agung Saputro of Indonesia to make the last four.

Hendra Setiawan/Markis Kido of Indonesia won 21-10 21-17 against countrymen Candra Wijaya/Luluk Hadiyanto to make up the final list for the men's doubles semis.

Hee Chun and Wee Kiong will meet Hendra Aprida and Alvent Yulianto while Yohan Hadikusumo and Wai Hong will meet Hendra and Markis in the semifinals.

In the women's double, the Ng sisters, Hui Ern and Hui Lin continued Malaysia's hopes for a title in the tournament after defeating Chan Tsz Ka/Chau Hoi Wah from Hong Kong 21-13, 23-21.

They will meet fifth seeded Macau pair Zhang Dan/Zhang Zhibo who defeated second seeded Savitree Amitrapai/Vacharaporn Munkit from Thailand 21-15, 21-18.

Unseeded Indonesian pair Vita Marissa and Nadya Melati defeated eighth seed Lotte Jonathans/Paulien Van Dooremalen 21-19, 21-10 to also make the last four.

They will meet fourth seed pair Duanganong Aroonkesorn/Kunchala Varavichitchaikul from Thailand who had an upset win of 21-18, 14-21, 21-16 against seventh seeded Japanese pair Rie Eto/Yu Wakita.

In the mixed doubles, unseeded Malaysian pair Ong Jian Guo/Chong Sook Chin had an upset win of 19-21, 21-18, 21-12 against seventh seeded Japanese pair Shintaro Ikeda/Reiko Shiota to enter the semifinals.

Fourth seed Chan Peng Soon/Goh Liu Ying and eighth seeded Tan Wee Kiong/Woon Khe Wei failed to followed their in their footsteps when they were defeated by their opponents Friday.

Peng Soon/Liu Ying were defeated 11-21, 9-21 by Devin Lahardi Fitriawan/Liliyana Natsir of Indonesia.

Wee Kiong/Khe Wei were defeated 17-21, 11-21 by third seeded Sudket Prapakamol/Saralee Thoungthongkam of Thailand.

Unseeded Markis Kido/Lita Nurlita had an upset win against fellow countrymen Hendra Aprida Gunawan/Vita Marissa.

Jian Guo and Sook Chin will meet Devin and Liliyana; while Sudket and Saralee will meet Markis and Lita in the semifinals.
