Badminton: Kwong Beng Ends Soon Huat's Giant-Killing Act To Clinch Title

ALOR SETAR, July 24 (Bernama) -- Chan Kwong Beng ended Goh Soon Huat's giant-killing act in the final of the Kedah Open to win the men's singles title with a 21-16, 15-21, 21-18 win here Saturday.

In a match that went the distance, Kwong Beng from Perak dashed the hopes of the unheralded Melaka lad Soon Huat who had looked set to win the title after upsetting home and tournament favourite Tan Chun Seang yesterday.

In the women's singles final which also went the distance, Lydia Cheah Li Ya had to dig deep into her reserves to overcome Sonia Cheah Su Ya 21-17, 19-21, 21-16 for the title.

The men's doubles title went to the young scratch pair of Goh Wei Shem/Teo Kok Siang who defeated Mak Hee Chun/Tan Wee Kiong in yet another three-game encouter, 21-16, 20-22, 21-11 while Goh Liu Ying/Lim Yin Loo disposed Vivian Hoo Kah Mun/Woon Khe Wei, 21-18, 21-15 to capture the crown.

Meanwhile, the mixed doubles title saw a major upset when Chan Peng Soon/Goh Liu Ying beat national senior players Tan Boon Heong/Chin Eei Hui 7-21, 21-15, 21-19.

Women's Singles: Lydia Cheah Li Ya (BAM/KL) bt Sonia Cheah Su Ya (BAM/KL) 21-17, 19-21, 21-16.

Men's Doubles: Mak Hee Chun (BAM/PRK)-Tan Wee Kiong (BAM/JOH) bt Goh Wei Shem (BAM/KL)-Teo Kok Siang (BAM/JOH) 21-16, 20-22, 21-11.

Women's Doubles: Goh Liu Ying (BAM/MEL)-Lim Yin Loo (BAM/NS) bt Vivian Hoo Kah Mun (BAM/KL)-Woon Khe Wei (BAM/SEL) 21-18, 21-15.

Mixed Doubles: Chan Peng Soon (BAM/PEN)-Goh Liu Ying (BAM/MEL) bt Tan Boon Heong (BAM/SEL)-Chin Eei Hui (BAM/PEN) 7-21, 21-15, 21-19.
