BADMINTON: Mew Choo Fails To Get Past India's Saina

NEW DELHI, April 16 (Bernama) -- It was not the best of days for Malaysian camp, with Wong Mew Choo joining the vanquished list, after losing in the Yonex-Sunrise Badminton Asia Championship quarter-finals on Friday.

Mew Choo was completely outplayed by the marauding India's Saina Nehwal, who combined perfect drops and quick smashes, which trapped the Malaysian.

Saina, ranked first in the tournament, secured a commanding position after wining the first set 21-5, leaving Mew Choo helpless in the same court -- where other Malaysian players like Muhammad Hafiz Hashim also suffered a similar fate today.

A tired Mew Choo made a come back with her rallies forcing Saina to make several errors in the second set, but the composed Indian, buoyed by her home crowd, did not wilt under pressure.

Saina completed the second set of the women's singles 21-13 in just 28 minutes.

It was an equally bad outing for the Malaysian men's doubles pairs in the quarter-finals, as both teams crashed out. Mak Hee Chun-Tan Wee Kiong lost to Chinese Taipei's pair Chen Hung Ling and Lin Yu Lang 19-21, 21-15, 21-18 while Cho Gun Woo-Yoo Yeon Seong of South Korea ousted Hoon Thien How-Ong Soon Hock 21-18, 21-17.

However, Malaysia's women's doubles Vivian Hoo Kah Mun-Woon Khe Wei raised the team's spirits somewhat when they defeated Meiliana Jauhari/Greysia Polil of Indonesia 26-24, 11-21, 21-14.

Malaysia's mixed doubles pair Chan Peng Soon-Goh Liu Ying added more smiles in the camp when they trounced Japan's Hirokatsu Hashimoto-Fujii Mizuki 18-21, 21-16, 21-9.

Earlier, Muhammad Hafiz Hashim had failed to reach the semi-finals in the men's singles after losing to Thailand's Boonsak Ponsana 21-19, 17-21, 21-10.

Results (Malaysian players only):
