Badminton is considered one of the important athletic game in the whole world. It is not only played between Asian countries but also has a good name in European countries too. People of all ages plays it in delightful and enjoying manner in order to remain fit and healthy.
Badminton made it's debut in summer 1992 Olympics held in Barcelona and since then it has been contested in 5 Olympiads. In every Olympics badminton competition, 50 different nations take participation with 19 appearing all 5 times. It is carefully organized and managed by BWF (Badminton World Federation). In the first appearance in Olympics, 4 events were held, with singles and doubles events for both men and women.
Four medals were awarded in each event, including two bronzes. In the next Olympics of 1996 which was held in Atlanta, 5 events were held. There were addition of Mixed Doubles in it.
Badminton World Federation ranking list is used to determine for the qualification of Olympics. For singles, 29 competitors are selected. For doubles, 19 pairs are selected. General method of selection is purely ranking base. Qualification process stops when qualification positions are filled. All players or pairs from the top 16 gets qualify for Olympics.
There are some restrictions like National Olympic Committee can send a maximum of three players or pairs. Players and pairs ranked below that only qualify if they are the highest ranked competitor from their nation. Each continent must have qualified for Olympics Badminton and it should be highest ranked player or pair. Badminton Olympics competition exerts a mighty reflection on players Badminton’s rankings.
Olympic badminton consists of a single elimination tournament. Each match is played to the best of three games. Games are of 21 points. New point system Rally scoring is used, meaning a player does not need to be serving to score. A player must win by two points or be the first player to 30 points.

For the first time in Youth summer Olympics held in Singapore 2010, there introduced a format of group play and knockout stages in badminton competition.
Nowadays, whole world is waiting for Badminton Olympics 2012 to be held. Badminton 2012 summer Olympics is scheduled to be contested between 25 July to 5 August. The competitions will take place at the same place where World Championships were played this year at Wembley Arena London in front of at least 6000 spectators.
There will be 172 athletes competing in five events: Men's Singles, Women's Singles, Men's Doubles, Women's Doubles and Mixed Doubles.
