BAM Must Enhance Promotion For Thomas And Uber Cup Finals

PUTRAJAYA, April 20 (Bernama) -- Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Ahmad Shabery Cheek wants the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) to enhance efforts in promoting the Thomas and Uber Cup finals hosted by Malaysia.

He said since the date for the championships, scheduled from May 9-16 at the Putra Stadium, Bukit Jalil, was already near, efforts to promote the event should be increased to create awareness among the people and to speed up ticket sales.

"I hope BAM will speed promotional activities as this is a prestigious mega sports event and the most prestigious in the badminton world," he told reporters after launching the "Bandung Games 2010" website at the ministry here on Tuesday.

Asked of his comment on concerns that tickets for the finals were expensive, Ahmad Shabery said he has yet to receive such complaints.

"I am not certain of such a complaint but organizing a championship of such magnitude is not cheap. In the past everyone expected the government to bear part of the costs but now with the concept of sports as an industry, the people must be ready to support such events," he said.

He added that the people must become a sports loving community and adopt sports as part of our culture and lifestyle.

"In our country, when a big sporting event comes to town, everyone tries to lobby for free tickets. But if the government hands out free tickets, it will also be the tax payers money.

"Money must be used for the development of sports and not for other purposes and people who want to see mega events must be ready to pay for it, even if it is a little expensive," he said.
