Be Sporting, Appeals Chong Wei To Malaysian Badmintion Fans

KUALA LUMPUR, May 11 (Bernama) -- Malaysia's badminton team captain Datuk Lee Chong Wei has appealed to local badminton fans watching the Thomas Cup tournament at the Putra Stadium in Bukit Jalil to be more sporting by not jeering at the losing Malaysian players.

He said he appreciated their presence to support the national team as all the national players competing in the Thomas Cup or Uber Cup wanted victory.

"Nobody wants to lose. But there are factors that have a bearing on players winning or losing. We hope the spectators will be more sporting and not jeer the players.

"The players will feel pressured if they are jeered at on home ground, and this is not good for team spirit," he told reporters, here Tuesday.

He was earlier asked to comment on the jeering by about 1,000 badminton fans at national doubles pair Mohd Fairuzizuan Mohd Tazari-Mohd Zakry Abdul Latif who tamely lost 15-21, 12-21 to Japanese pair Noriyasu Hirata-Hirokatsu Hashimoto in 27 minutes.

Chong Wei also advised Mohd Fairuzizuan and Mohd Zakry to forget tonight's incident and focus their attention on their upcoming quarter-final match.
