Birthday Party Led Wang Sisters To Represent USA In Uber Cup 2010

KUALA LUMPUR, May 8 (Bernama) -- Had it not been for a relative's birthday party, seven years ago, sisters Rena and Iris Wang would not be representing the USA in the current Uber Cup 2010 tournament being held here.

It fact, it was at their cousin Priscilla Lun's birthday celebration there that the siblings were first introduced to a game of badminton with the birthday girl herself.

Co-incidentally, Lun, a top badminton player, is in the Uber Cup team, with the Wang sisters.

"Our interest was fired up about seven years ago, when Iris and I were so impressed with the manner Priscilla played badminton during the party," said Rena, 18, a semifinalist at the Pan Am Badminton tournament last year.

Asked to comment on time management of her studies and the game, she said her training and involvement in the Uber Cup tournament did not affect her studies.

"I'm used to training daily after my classes," said the first-year student from University of California, who is majoring in Biology.

Iris, 15, said that although the training was tough and challenging, she managed to cope with her studies.

On the USA's chances in the Uber Cup, especially when drawn against Malaysia and defending champion China in Group A, she said chances were slim to beat Malaysia as it was one of the stronger teams in the tournament, while the Great Wall team would be defending the Uber Cup for the 12th time.

"If we are unable to perform well here, we will try our best in the Olympic Games," said the Arcadia High School student.

USA Uber Cup players comprise the Wang sisters, Lun, Eva Lee, Keui-Ya Chen, Cee Nantana Ketpura and Mesinee Mangkalakiri.
