Chaudhary and Akram Take Top Honours in Pakistan Tournament

In a repeat of last year's successes, Pakistan Wapda and NBP successfully defended their men's and women's team titles in the 11th Amir Abdullah Khan Tournament 2008 in Lahore, Pakistan.

Atiq Chaudhary, although losing his rubber in the team event, emerged as the most successful player in the tournament by taking four titles.

He won the men's singles, men's doubles, mixed doubles and was also part of the Wapda's triumphant squad in the team event.

In the women's singles final, NBP's Ayesha Akram came from behind to beat Uzma Butt of Wapda to retain her title, one of three crowns that she won on the final day.

Chaudhary won the men's singles with a hard-fought 22-20, 21-19 victory over third-seeded Ahsan Qamar, using his powerful smashes and quick thinking at the net to outwit his opponent on the crucial points.

He also partnered Rizwan Azam to victory in the men's doubles when they beat M. Waqas and Kashif Sulehri 20-22, 21-8, 22-20 in the final.

Chaudhary took his third gold of the day in the mixed doubles when he and his partner, Palwasha Basheer, beat Ahsan Qamar and Sara Khan by 21-16, 21-17.

His only defeat of the day was in a men's doubles rubber during the team final when he and Rizwan Rana fell to NBP's Azam, who is Chaudhary's doubles partner when not in the team tournament and Sulehri 21-19, 21-16.

However, his teammates had done enough to give Wapda a 3-1 victory and hand Chaudhary his fourth gold medal.

Akram got the ball rolling in her quest for women's honours by winning the singles title with an 18-21, 21-9, 21-11 triumph over Wapda's Butt in the final.

She then teamed up with Basheer, Atiq's mixed doubles partner, in the women's doubles competition. The pair were unstoppable as they lifted the title with a 21-8, 22-20 victory over the two Saras, Sara Khan and Sara Mohmand.

Akram completed her triple gold haul when she won the team title with NBP, the National Bank of Pakistan, winning two rubbers.

She partnered Basheer to victory over Butt and Farzana Ali, 21-13, 19-21, 21-12 and then beat Aneeqa Rana by 21-10, 21-12 as NBP overcome Wapda 3-0.
