Chinese Look Strong in Women's and Mixed Doubles

With China fielding a powerful team for the Uber Cup, other sides have practically given up on hopes of beating them.

The number one seeds are Yang We and Zhang Jiawen, who have been drawn to meet Indonesia's Liliyana Natsir and Vita Marissa in their opening match.

The second seeds, also from China, are Du Jing and Yu Yang, who face a difficult first round against the South Korean pairing of Ha Hung-eun and Kim Min-jung.

Should the top two Chinese pairs fail to make any headway, there is yet another combination who have a chance to fly the home flag in Beijing.

They are Zhang Yawen and Wei Yili, who must overcome a strong challenge from Great Britain's Gail Emms and Donna Kellog in their opening match.

Should Yang and Zhang beat the Indonesians in their opener, they are likely to face the difficult Japanese pair of Miyuki Maeda and Satoko Suetsuna in their next match.

A possible semi-final lies with South Korea's Lee Kyung-won and Lee Hyo-jung, who first meet Malaysia's Wong Pei Tty and Chin Eei Hui.

In the mixed doubles, favourites and top seeds Nova Widianto and Natsir have been drawn to face South Korea's Hang Sang-hoon and Hwang Yu-mi in the first round.

Great Britain's Gail Emms and Nathan Robertson, silver medallists in Athens four years ago, will struggle this year to get out of the first round after they drew the second seeds from China, Zheng Bo and Gao Ling.

The winners of that match face a likely quarter-final against Koreans Lee Yong-dae and Lee Hyo-jang. They have a first-round encounter against the New Zealand pair of Craig Cooper and Renee Flavell.

China, who are looking for a clean sweep of all five gold medals in the badminton competition, have another duo for the mixed doubles in He Hanbin and Yu Yang, who meet Britain's Anthony Clark and Kellong in their first match.
