Chong Wei Advances To Semi-Finals

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 21 (Bernama) -- Datuk Lee Chong Wei advanced to the semi-finals of the Proton Malaysian Open badminton championship after making short work of his quarter-final opponent, Nguyen Tien Minh of Vietnam, in the men's singles at the Putra Stadium in Bukit Jalil near here Friday.

The world number one took just 40 minutes to down Tien Minh in 21-15, 21-16.

Though behind 8-11 in the first set, Chong Wei changed strategy to overcome the Vietnamese who was playing an attacking game.

"I applied skill play to draw him into making mistakes," Chong Wei told reporters after the match which was also witnessed by Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali, the wife of former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

Chong Wei, who has won the Malaysian Open six times, will meet Chen Long of China next.

Chen Long advanced to the last four without contest after his opponent and compatriot Lin Dan withdrew because of an abdominal injury.

Chong Wei said though his arch nemesis Lin Dan was out of the picture, this did not mean he could rest on his laurels.

"Yes... everyone would like to see a Chong Wei-Lin Dan final but it is not to be. Chen Long is also a dangerous player and I must be on my toes," he said.

The other semi-final match will see Indonesia's Taufik Hidayat take on compatriot Simon Santoso.

The semi-final matches begin at 2pm Saturday.

Meanwhile, Malaysia's only other hope to make the semis, the men's doubles pair of Mohd Zakri Abdul Latif/Hoon Thien How were shown the exit by Naoki Kawame/Shoji Sato of Japan.

The new combination went down to the 29th ranked Japanese pair in 16-21, 19-21.

"They were more speedy and in control. They were able to neutralise our attacks and we also made too many mistakes," Mohd Zakry told reporters after the match.

The Japanese pair will meet Mads Conrads-Petersen/Jonas Rasmussen of Denmark in the semis on Saturday.

The other semifinal match will see Mohammad Ahsan/Bona Septano of Indonesia squaring off against Chai Bao/Guo Zhendong of China.
