Chong Wei Called Rosmah To Boost His Morale

KUALA LUMPUR, March 16 (Bernama) -- Malaysia's World No. 1 shuttler Datuk Lee Chong Wei revealed today that he telephoned Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor, wife of the prime minister, before and after every match he played at the just-concluded All-England tournament in Birmingham where he won the singles title.

He talked of these calls to boost his morale when he met Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak and Rosmah at their residence in Jalan Duta, here. Also present were Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Shabery Cheek and national badminton singles coach Datuk Misbun Sidek.

Rosmah said she was most proud of Chong Wei's victory, but reminded the Beijing Olympics silver medallist not to slack but focus on helping to win the Thomas Cup in May.

She said Chong Wei should not become complacent following the various awards and incentives showered upon him for winning the All-England title.

"Now, Chong Wei must focus on winning the Thomas Cup. You have promised to win," she told him.

Rosmah, who is the patron of the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM), suggested that an analysis be conducted on the inconsistent performance of national badminton players to determine the cause of their ups and downs.

She also reminded the BAM to also focus on the training for the rest of the players in preparation for the Thomas Cup and Uber Cup, instead of concentrating only on Chong Wei.

"One has to consider the other players as well. These (Thomas and Uber Cup competitions) are team competitions," she said.

At the almost hour-long meeting, Najib and Rosmah presented bouquets of flowers to Chong Wei and his coach Misbun and talked of the national badminton players' experiences in Birmingham.
