Chong Wei Cruises Through To Second Round

JOHOR BAHARU, July 7 (Bernama) -- National badminton ace Datuk Lee Chong Wei easily advanced to the second round of the Malaysian Open Grand Prix Gold badminton championships when he despatched off England's Bhokanandh Arak 21-8, 21-10 at the Johor Baharu City Stadium here Wednesday.

With the absence of Chinese players, Chong Wei's biggest hurdle in lifting the title will likely come from Indonesian ace Taufik Hidayat who had a 21-15, 21-18 victory over Malaysia's Ayub Nur Mohd Azriyn today.

Chong Wei did not want comment too much on his chances as he is having some leg muscle problems, though not serious.

Also advancing to the second round in the men's singles was another national singles ace Wong Choong Han who defeated Indonesia's Pratama Adi in 21-14, 21-9.

Muhammad Hafiz Hashim who is also said to be experiencing leg muscle problems joined his counterparts when he shrugged off Holland's Afif Saber in straight sets of 21-12, 21-15.

Barring any fitness issues, Hafiz is expected to advance further in the tournament and is likely to meet Choong Han in the quarterfinals.

The national mixed doubles pair of Chan Peng Soon and Goh Liu Ying also made the cut to the second round when they beat Hong Kong's Lo Lok Kei and Mong Kwan Yi 21-13, 21-14 while their compatriots Tan Wee Kiong and Woon Khe Wei sent Indonesia's pair Wardana Tri Kusuma and Melati Nadya packing in 21-15, 21-18.

Thirty-eight men's singles matches and 16 mixed doubles matches were held as of 2pm today. The opening round of the women's singles and the second round of the men's singles will be held from 6pm Wednesday.
