Chong Wei Moves To Third Round After Defeating Daren Liew

JOHOR BAHARU, July 8 (Bernama) -- National badminton ace Datuk Lee Chong Wei advanced to the third round of the men's singles in 2010 Yonex-Sunrise Malaysia Open Grand Prix Gold tournament after he defeated compatriot Daren Liew 21-16, 21-14 at the Johor Baharu City Stadium here Wednesday night.

Liew gave Chong Wei a good fight but a leg injury appeared to have prevented him fromn going further.

Chong Wei is set to meet eleventh seeded Wong Wing Ki of Hong Kong, who defeated Goh Soon Huat of Malaysia 21-7, 21-15, before he can enter the quarter finals.

Another Malaysian player, Chong Wei Feng defeated fellow national player Lok Chong Chieh 21-12, 22-20 to set up a meeting with eigthh seeded Andre Kurniawan Tedjono of Indonesia who defeated his own countryman Robin Gonansa 21-15, 22-20.

Muhammad Hafiz Hashim who defeated Karunaratne Niluka of Sri Lanka 21-8, 21-19 will meet Fauzi Adnan of Singapore in the third round. Fauzi had despatched off Japanese player Saeki Koichi 21-14, 21-14 in the second round.

Meanwhile, another national ace Wong Choong Hann defeated compatriot Zulfadli Zulkiffli 21-12, 21-10 and will next meet Wei Nan of Hong Kong who won against Malaysia's Beryno Wong Jiann Tze in 21-16, 21-14.

Two other Malaysian players who managed to move forward to the third round were Krishnan Yogendran and Tan Chun Seang.

Other players who made it were second seeded Taufik Hidayat of Indonesia; Rasmus Fladberg and Hans-Kristian Vittinghus of Denmark; Ajay Jayram of India and Chan Yan Kit and Hu Yun of Hong Kong.
