Chong Wei's Defeat At Asiad Should Be Viewed Seriously, Says Ahmad Shabery

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 22 (Bernama) -- Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek will hold discussions with the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) on its training and development programmes following Datuk Lee Chong Wei's defeat in the singles final on Sunday at the Asian Games in Guangzhou, China.

He said Chong Wei's defeat on Sunday should be taken seriously and that BAM should follow the example of leaders of other sports associations who were at the matches involving their teams to support and spur them on.

"We don't want our badminton to drop in world ranking," Ahmad Shabery told reporters at the Parliament lobby Monday.

He said the BAM leadership should emulate the Malaysian Hockey Federation where the Sultan of Perak Sultan Azlan Shah, Sultan of Pahang Sultan Ahmad Shah and Tengku Mahkota of Pahang Tengku Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah were present to give moral support to the Malaysian hockey squad competing in the ongoing 16th Asian Games.

Ahmad Shabery said their presence had made a big impact on the squad who garnered the same points with defending champions South Korea after four matches in Group A, where they beat China to move into the semi-finals of the men's hockey event.

He said the defeat of Chong Wei, the world number one and All-England champion, to China's Lin Dan on Sunday meant Malaysia failed to end the 40-year gold drought in the singles at the Games.

The minister said he would also be gathering information from the leaders, officials and committee members of the other sports organisations who were present at the Asian Games on what they had done for their athletes to perform well.

Asked whether Malaysia could win more gold medals in the other events, he was confident that the athletes would be able to perform well like they did at the recent Commonwealth Games in New Delhi, India.
