Danish Delight at the Double

After a thrilling and eventful tournament, Denmark clinched a Danish double at the Uber and Thomas Cups by triumphing in both events.

The Danish female badminton team clinched victory with a 3-1 win over Holland in the Uber Cup final whereas their male counterparts went one better and defeated England 3-0 in the Thomas Cup final. These victories were no real surprise as the Danish squads were ranked favourites in both events and the order of the seeds was proved right on this occasion.

There was clear disappointment for the English Men's team who were comprehensively trounced in the final of the Thomas Cup but although the Scottish female team could only finish fourth after losing to Germany in the third and fourth play-off, it is by far the best placing the team has ever managed in this tournament and the team has come away from the tournament with a lot of credit.

Winning four matches in a row placed the Scottish females into the semi-final but they were unable to repeat their upset of France as Holland triumphed 3-0. With the top 3 teams in both events being granted entry to the International World Cup in Jakarta later on this year there was still plenty to play for the Scottish team but sadly it was one mountain too far to climb for the team and it was the Germans who clinched the last remaining place with a 3-1 overall victory.

Things had started promisingly for the Scots in this play-off as Susan Hughes clinched a 21-12, 18-21, 21-19 win over Xu Huaiwen but this was to be the only triumph for the Scottish ladies as they bowed out, sad but not downhearted. Sadly Linda Sloan was unable to keep her impressive run going and lost out to Juliane Schenk while Rita Yuan Gao was defeated by Petra Reichel.

This may have brought a sad end to the tournament for these two players but throughout the event, their talent and determination was evident and although Yuan Gao is nearing the end of her career, Sloan looks to be a talent who could enliven the Scottish game for many years to come.

It can only be hoped that the experience will have been of great benefit to the Scottish ladies and with the next major international tournament for the team coming in April, there is a lot to keep the team focused. Herning in Denmark will be the host for the European Team and individual championships and if the dynamic duo of Linda Sloan Rita Yuan Gao can be kept together then who knows how well the Scottish ladies will be able to do.

With the Scottish females just failing at the last hurdle to book a place in the Jakarta championships, Denmark, Netherlands and Germany will represent Europe in the Womens event with Denmark, England and Germany going through to represent the Mens teams.

With Denmark and Germany qualifying in both events, it is clear there is a strong depth of quality of badminton talent in these two countries and many hopes will be pinned on Denmark to see if they can triumph in the Far East as successfully as they have managed in Europe.
