Fernando Academy Boosting Coaching in Canada

Dave Fernando, a well-known badminton coach in the little-known town of Brampton, Canada, is hoping a small link with Malaysia will help him produce more coaches in his area.

Fernando has opened an academy at the Brampton Centennial School for a "train the trainers" programme, in which members can qualify for their National Certified Coaching Program certificates.

The programme is affiliated with the Badminton Information Academy Coaching School of Kuala Lumpur and is designed to teach basic, intermediate and advanced skills.

The link with Kuala Lumpur means the academy can share the same badminton courses, methods of training and skills transfers.

Fernando, a former professional player who is now coaching full-time, receives a lot of help from the City of Brampton and the Peel Region School Board to keep his academy going.

He is happy with the results so far of his new plan to produce more coaches in his area.

"Since the start of the program early this month, three coaches have already signed up, seeking to adopt coaching as their career," he was quoted as saying in regional media.

"I love serving the community in a healthy way. Although we are in the initial stages, I can proudly say Brampton can produce players as well as coaches."

Apart from helping coaches, Fernando has successfully been running his Fernando Youth Academy for the past three years.

His goals were to provide kids with a chance to take up a healthy sport as well as battle obesity among the young in the community.

"I started this academy to overcome obesity among children. My passion was to pass my skills to the youth of this community," said Fernando.

It is also a family affair for the Fernando's. His wife Audrey acts as the general manager while daughter Kal is the programme coordinator.

The youth academy provides both theoretical and practical lessons for the kids. Fernando delves into the history of badminton, teaches basic skills and shows them how they can improve once they have obtained the fundamentals.

He already has a full house for the next session, which runs from September this year to June 2009, with confirmations done on a first-come, first served basis.
