Four Indonesian Top Shuttlers Withdraw From Malaysia Open Super Series

JAKARTA, Jan 18 (Bernama) -- Four top Indonesian shuttlers were confirmed absent to vie in the Proton Malaysia Badminton Open Super Series, which is scheduled to commence in Kuala Lumpur on Tuesday, China's Xinhua news agency cited the Secretary-General of Indonesian Badminton Association (PBSI) Jacob Rusdianto as saying.

Indonesian men's singles player Sony Dwi Kuncoro and women's singles player Adriyanti Firdasari withdrew at the last minute due to a back injury, respectively. Sony was suffering from a year-long back injury.

While, fourth seed women's doubles pairing Greysia Polii and Meiliana Jauhary chose to stay in Indonesia, saying they had not had time to prepare following their run at last year's season-ender BWF Super Series Finals in Taiwan early this year.

Some 38 Indonesian shuttlers will compete in the US$400,000 championship, which runs until Jan 23.

Indonesia will be represented by men's singles player Taufik Hidayat, who is seeded second at the event and men's doubles team Hendra AG and Alvent Yulianto Chandra are seeded third.

Men's doubles pair M. Ahsan and Bona Septano are seeded sixth.

Also representing Indonesia are eighth seeds mixed doubles pair Liliyana Natsir and Ahmad Tantowi, the Jakarta Post online reported.

The Malaysia event will also mark the start of the professional career of former world top mixed doubles player Nova Widianto, who has returned with his former partner Vita Marissa.

Last year, Nova was split from his world No. 1 partner Liliyana Natsir due to his age.

The split abruptly ended his Indonesian Badminton Association (PBSI) career.

Most of these Indonesian shuttlers will also participate in the inaugural Korean Open Super Series Premier which follows, from Jan 25 to 30.

The Super Series Premier offers a total prize kitty of US$1.2 million.

Sony and Firda are also unlikely to take part in the Korea Open Super Series Premier.
