Hariyanto and Hartono Turn Back Clock

It was a time for stars of the past to shine once again as they showed off their skills at the KX-MBA International Invitational Badminton Championships at Michael's Badminton Academy (MBA) in Puchong, Malaysia.

Indonesia's former world champion Hariyanto Arbi and doubles legend Eddy Hartono give the fans a glimpse of their former glory with some classy moves.

Hariyanto, one of the most feared singles players of his era in the 90s, formed a doubles pairing with Herman Loksono Lioe to beat compatriots Harianto Halim Setiono and Rudianto Seng in the men's doubles 70 years combined event.

Eddy Hartono won the men's doubles over 90 combined age category when he partnered Effendy Widjaja to a 21-16, 19-21, 21-18 victory over another Indonesian pair, Simbarsono Suntanto and Suganyanto Hado Wahono.

The three-day event was organised by badminton enthusiast Michael Lee and attracted close to 400 players, including 150 international athletes representing 18 countries.

"The visitors had a great time because we showed them our warm Malaysian hospitality. Following the practice session on the eve of the tournament, we treated them to local durians and lok-lok steamboat," Lee was quoted as saying in the Malaysian media.

Among the nationalities represented were Indonesians, Americans, Chinese, Singapore and players from Macau.

Apart from the badminton and local food, the guests also enjoyed a three-day outing to Kota Kinabalu in Sabah for the post-tournament celebrations.

The Singaporeans were by far the largest group of foreigners with a team of 46 players while Vietnam also had players in bulk, bringing in 34.

"Besides the badminton tournament, they lined up an entertaining programme for us. It was also a social gathering for the keen badminton players," Singapore team manager Victor Sim was quoted as saying.

Lee told local media that another event is being planned for 2010, when Kuala Lumpur hosts the Thomas Cup.

Said Lee: "It was a tedious task to organise the meet. But, we are glad that most of the participants gave us positive feedback.

"We are planning to organise another tournament to coincide with the Thomas Cup Finals to be held in Kuala Lumpur in 2010.

"The team event will be similar to the Thomas Cup format. And the participants will also get the opportunity to witness the semi-finals and final Thomas Cup ties during their trip here."
