How High is Badminton Net?

Badminton is a racquet game played with two or four players, across a net. Before getting started there are quite a few things you need to know: how high is badminton net, the court dimensions, and various other rules and regulations.

The face of the game as we have it today was not always like this. The equipments like nets and net posts were not always a part of the game. The game is believed to have originated in Greece, about 2000 years ago.

In medieval England a children's game called Battledore and Shuttlecock was popular. The game reached India in 1860s, through the agencies of the officer's of British Raj who in their bid to make the game a little more competitive added the elements of net and net posts.

In 1877, the Bath Badminton Club, the first badminton club in world set forth a set of rules for the sport. The Badminton Association of England published a proper set of rules, not very different from those we have today, in 1893. The International Badminton Federation (IBF) governs the rules and regulations of the game and is responsible for the promotion of the sport globally.

A badminton court is a rectangular space, 44 feet long X 17 feet wide for a single's match and 44 feet long X 20 feet wide for a double's match. It is normally made out of wood or composite flooring surface. The idea is for it to be smooth and leveled. A minimum of 6.5 feet of clear space on all four sides is required.

The court is divided into two halves by a net. The next obvious question is- how high is badminton net? The net is supposed to be 5 feet 1 inch on the edges and 5 feet in the centre. The poles that support the net are planted outside the double's line even when a single's match is being played.

Technological developments have changed our lives remarkably and the world of sports is not untouched by it. The variety of sports goods flooding the market these days is immense. It's important to make your choices wisely.

Badminton nets are now available in a range of materials, from polyethelene, to nylon, to vinyl. The basic criterion when picking up a net should be to check for durability and strength.

The net should be made of fine natural cord or artificial fiber of a dark color of even thickness, minimum being 15mm and maximum 20mm. The first thing to be taken care of when setting up the court is to check how high is the badminton net.

Also ensure that the net is properly extended between the poles. The depth of the net should be 2 feet 6 inches. The net should be edged with 75mm white tape doubled and supported by a cord or cable that is stretched over the posts.

The game of badminton involves the opponents hitting the shuttlecock over the net into other's side till it touches the ground. The area of net play can be the deciding factor in any match and requires finesse. It involves delicate, well placed shots, and can help deceive your opponent, effortlessly.

In professional circuits all the dimensions and measurements, like the height of the badminton net, have to be precise. But in private games, when playing with your kids for example, how high the badminton net is, can be variable according to your discretion and requirement.
