Indian Hopes for Pavitra

Pavitra Srivatsan may not be a name that is known to many people around the world but the 18 year old badminton player hailing from India hopes that this will be rectified after the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.

The rising star has been selected in the badminton squad for the event and whilst she has hopes of seeing some of her sporting heroes play during the event her main focus will be performing strongly and laying out a marker for future glory.

Srivatsan comes from a successful line of badminton players with both of her parents being badminton players. Srivatsan may have originally had more love for karate but after some encouragement from her father, the youngster enrolled at a badminton summer camp that was being held in Hyderabad.

Initially it may just have been another sport to the fit youngster but when tournaments started producing medals and successful finishes, it was clear that she had a strong talent for the game. This talent has developed and has been evidenced by strong and mature performances at the Commonwealth Games and the Uber Cup. She may only be 18 but Pavitra Srivatsan will be going to the Olympic Games with a great level of experience and probably more than many of her rivals will be able to offer.

Although the Indian star admits that the Chinese number one is in a different class compared to the majority of players in the badminton world, Srivatsan has no fears about facing up to any of the Chinese players at the Beijing Games.

She accepts that as the worlds top players are able to train together, they have the ability to push each other on hard and this can improve their stamina and technique but Srivatsan does not believe this to be an insurmountable advantage. Given the youngster came into badminton later than most and has other sporting experience behind her, her stamina is at a high level which has been developed due to a lot of running.

This boost in speed and a strong determination to win every point have been key factors in pushing Pavitra into the top 30 players in the world. When you consider that she will have many more tournaments to come in the future, the future looks extremely bright for the young Indian starlet. Future plans are not concerning Srivatsan at the moment though with the Olympics in Beijing being at the forefront of her attention.

Even though the player admits that there will be a few events she wishes to participate in before the Beijing Games, these will be to fine tune her preparation and to ensure she has top level practise before the event. The Super Series badminton events which are taking place in Indonesia, Singapore and Thailand will all offer Srivatsan an opportunity to play against a strong level of opposition and to ensure she remains in peak condition before the Olympics begin in August.

Remember the name as Pavitra Srivatsan has the potential to cause some upsets and grab some glory over this summer.
