Jwala Scores More Doubles Success

Jwala Gutta had more reason to celebrated after his took India to a double gold medal winning performance at the Bulgarian Grand Prix tournament in Sofia.

Jwala combined with V Diju to win mixed doubles title and then joined up with regular partner Shruti Kurian to win the women's doubles crown.

Only last week, Jwala and Diju combined to win the mixed doubles competition at the Bitburger Grand Prix in Germany.

And they repeated their success in Bulgaria, coming from behind to beat Indonesia's fifth seeded pairing of Fran Kurniawan and Shendy Puspa Irawati in the final in a difficult 45-minute contest.

Irawati was again on the opposing side of the net for the women's doubles final, this time alongside Meiliana Juahari.

However, the 26th-ranked pairing of Jwala and Shruti had no problems winning the title as they swept aside their opponents 21-11, 21-19 in just 28 minutes.

Rising Bulgarian player Petya Nedelcheva was a popular winner of the women's singles title as she won in front of her home crowd.

Petya, who won the Bulgarian International Championships the previous week, defeated Indonesian Rosaria Yusfin Pungkasari 21-14, 21-12 in the final.

It was a confident victory over the local girl, who had beaten India's Aditi Mutakar in the semi-finals.

Denmark's Joachim Persson took the men's singles crown, overcoming a tough battle from Taiwan's Hsieh Yu-hsin in the final to win 17-21, 21-19, 21-19.

Four of the six matches that Persson played went to three games but his efforts were worth it because he is able to close in on a place in the top 10 in the world rankings.

Denmark also found success in the men's doubles competition with Mathias Boe and Carsten Mogensen taking the title.

The top seeds were hardly troubles throughout the competition although they had to fight hard to take the first game off their Indonesian final opponents Fran Kurniawan and Wijaya Rendra.

The final score was 25-23, 21-16 to the Danes as Indonesia went home empty handed despite reaching three of the five finals.

As a Grand Prix event, the Bulgarian Open doesn't carry as many ranking points or prize money as a Super Series tournament.
