Koo and Tan Ready for All England Defence

Malaysia's Koo Kien Keat and Tan Boon Heong are hoping to keep their country's flag flying at the All England Championships when they defend their men's doubles title at the hallowed Birmingham venue.

Koo and Tan stunned the badminton world last year when they triumphed at the All England. And they have since developed into one of the world's leading men's pairings.

They won three Super Series titles last year, following up their All England triumph with victories in Switzerland and Denmark.

Koo told local media that he feels comfortable in Europe and this, he hopes, will give them a boost in Birmingham.

"Europe hosted four legs of the Super Series last year and we won in three of them. Playing in Europe certainly brings the best out of us," Koo was quoted as saying.? "The only blemish in Europe last year was in the French Open. We were beaten in the quarter-finals. Hopefully, we will make a record clean sweep in Europe this year."

Koo and Tan, however, have a difficult first-round assignment in England. They play the Japanese duo of Shuichi Sakamoto and Shintaro Ikeda, who defeated them in the second round of the Malaysian Open two months ago.

However, Koo shrugged off that loss, saying the pair has improved over the past two months.

"I am not being over confident but I would reckon that Boon Heong and I are in better form. We certainly played well in the recent Thomas Cup qualifying round in Vietnam last month," said Koo.

"We are more confident of ourselves. Boon Heong have also found some of his old touches. But having said that, we will not make the same mistake of under-rating our opponents. We are mentally prepared for the task ahead and hopefully, we will be able to justify it by winning the title."

The Malaysian pair are seeded to beat the Japanese in the first round. If they hold to form, they are likely to play the Indonesian team of Joko Riyadi and Hendra Gunawan in the second round.

After that would be the quarter-finals where there could await two possible Danish pairings - Jens Eriksen-Martin Lundgaard Hansen and Lars Paaske-Jonas Rasmussen.
