Koreans Take Men's Doubles Title in Hong Kong

South Korea's Lee Yong-dae and Jung Jae-sung won the men's doubles competition at the Hong Kong Open Super Series event with a hard-fought three-game victory over Malaysia's rising pair, Mohd Zakry Abdul Latif and Mohd Fairuzizuan Mohd Tazari.

The third-seeded duo needed summon all their power and skills to put down the feisty Malaysians, seeded fourth, as they claimed the last Super Series title of the season before the Grand Finals in Kota Kinabalu.

Zakry and Fairuzizuan, though, can be proud of their efforts. In the semi-finals they scored a morale-boosting victory over compatriots Koo Kien Keat and Tan Boon Heong, the former All England champions.

Although Koo and Tan were seeded one rung below them at five, they are more experienced than Zakry and Fairuzizuan, who ran out 12-21, 21-13, 22-20 winners.

It wasn't all doom and gloom for Koo and Tan, who in the quarter-finals inflicted a rare defeat on Indonesia's top seeds and Olympic champions Markis Kido and Hendra Setiawan.

The fact that the Malaysians won 21-11, 21-17 suggests that the Indonesians were off-form but it doesn't detract for their victory and will be a huge boost to Koo and Tan, who are under pressure at home to perform.

In their run to the final, Zakry and Fairuzizuan were required to beat two other South Korean pairs. In the first round, they defeated qualifiers Kim Ki-jung and Ko Sung-hyun 24-22, 21-19 and in the quarter-finals, they were taken to three games by Cho Gun-woo and Yoo Yeon-seong before winning 21-16, 12-21, 21-15.

In between they beat fellow Malaysians Chan Peng Soon and Lim Khim Wah.

Lee and Jung didn't face any real competition until the quarter-final stage, where they beat China's eighth-seeded pair of Guo Zhengdong and Xu Chen 17-21, 21-15, 21-11.

In the semi-finals, they brought an end to the wonderful run of English qualifiers Anthony Clark and Nathan Robertson.

After beating some strong pairs on the way to the last four, Clark and Robertson, who is a former Olympic silver medallist in mixed doubles, lost 21-19, 21-17 to Lee and Jung.
