Malaysia Grab Two Gold Medals

KUALA LUMPUR, July 16 (Bernama) -- Malaysia won two gold medals when it won the men's and women's team finals of the Asean School Games (ASG) at Cheras Badminton Stadium here Friday.

Malaysia beat Thailand 3-0 in the men's category while the women beat their counterparts from Indonesia also 3-0.

Team coach Mohd Najib Latif said the men's win was a surprise as Thailand fielded Boonyakorn Thumphaniwang and Samatcha Tovannakasem/Kritti Cholprasertsuk who played at the World Junior Championships last year.

He said the Malaysian players were reminded not to be over-confident as the Thais were a strong team.

"It was a close affair but the Malaysian players worked hard and prevailed," he told Bernama here Friday.

The pair of Teo Ee Yi/Nelson Heng also had to endure a rubber set before beating Siwadol Sookpradit/Nitiwat Wongracha 18-21, 22-20, 21-13.

Malaysia's second single Goh Giap Chin beat Aekkorn Pungchay 21-18,21-16 to land the gold medal.
