Malaysian Uber Cup Line-Up May See Changes

KUALA LUMPUR, April 28 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Uber Cup women line-up may see changes if the Badminton World Federation (BWF) accept an application to replace two injured players.

The application to replace Lydia Cheah (second singles) and Julia Wong (third singles), both of them nursing knee injuries, was sent to the BWF yesterday, said Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) general manager Kenny Goh.

He said BAM was now awaiting the BWF's decision, which would be made by its match referee.

In accordance with BWF rules, Malaysia can replace their players on injury grounds but the substitutes must be ranked lower than the players being replaced, he told reporters here on Wednesday.

Based on the world ranking, Lydia, who is ranked 63rd, will be replaced by replaced by Sanatasah Saniru, who is ranked 99th while Julia (147th) will be substituted by junior shuttler Sonia Cheah (280th).

The original Uber Cup squad comprised Wong Mew Choo, Julia, Lydia, Tee Jing Yi (singles) and Chin Eei Hui/Wong Pei Tty, Woon Khe Wei/Vivian Ho, Goh Lui Ying/Ng Hui Lin (doubles).

Malaysia were drawn in Group A together with China and the United States.

National singles chief coach Rashid Sidek said if the application was rejected, Lydia and Julia would continue to be in the Uber Cup campaign but their injuries might affect Malaysia's performance.
