Malaysian Badminton Controversy Continues

Although it looks as though Lee Wan Wah has passed the medical test conditions that the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) were insisting he took, the controversy and debate looks to rumble on.

Many say that the BAM were within their rights to ensure their players were in tip top condition for the event and that they should ensure the team travels with the best chances of getting a medal. However, with the event not until August, it has been said that there is plenty of time for a player to improve their fitness for the event. The procrastination has angered Wan Wah's partner Choong Tan Fook.

As Tan Fook has rightly pointed out, over the past year he and Wan Wah have worked extremely hard to earn the right for Olympic qualification and having fulfilled the criteria, should have been given more leeway to prove their fitness and take the place they earned. With two Olympics behind them and no medals, the pair has worked doggedly all year to ensure they have one final crack at seizing Olympic glory.

This is why the pair were bristling with the reaction that has been given to the shoulder injury that Wan Wah picked up at the Thomas Cup. Given that the duo were representing the BAM at that event also, it is fair to say that they feel more should have been done by the organization to give them a helping hand.

There is no doubt that the pairing of Lee Wan Wah and Choong Tan Fook has been impressive in the past year with the duo finding form at the World Championships and China Open reaching the semi finals. A similar level of performance at the 2008 Olympic Games could well be enough to propel the duo onto the podium and allowing them to realize their dream of winning an Olympic medal. The duo may feel as though they have been let down by BAM but if they do get to Beijing you can guarantee that they will be giving their all in the event.

Of course, for every team that gets to the Olympics there will be others who are left disappointed at missing out on the major event and this will be true of Mohd Fairuzizuan Mohd Tazari and Mohd Zakry Abdul Latif. The pair has been sitting on the sidelines knowing that if injury ruled out Lee Wan Wah of the Olympics, they would be heading to the event. At the moment, Koo Kien Keat and Tan Boon Heong are waiting to see who will be traveling with them for the Beijing Games to play for Malaysia.

There is still plenty of time for the Olympic Games so no matter who gets the nod to represent Malaysia at the Games, will have sufficient time to prepare and let wounds and injuries heal. With so much attention and importance being placed on the Games, it is only natural that the best teams have to be put forward but it looks as though some players will have plenty more to say about the BAM and their handling of the situation.
