Malaysian Badminton Squad Still to be Finalised

Some nations may have finalised their squad for the badminton event at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing but for other countries and players, the wait continues.

One country that is still in a quandary about who will be representing the nation this summer is Malaysia and there is a lot of doubt over what sort of team will represent the country. Malaysia are considered by some as having a strong chance of returning from Beijing with a medal or two and the uncertainty over who will be playing will not be helping the focus of the squad.

The big problem for the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) has arisen due to injuries to some star players. The Thomas Cup is a prestigious badminton event in its own right but right now there will be some in the BAM who are cursing it.

Lee Wan Wah sustained a shoulder injury during the event being held in Jakarta and uncertainty over his fitness may lead to a reshuffle in the Malaysian squad. The BAM are currently debating on whether this injury should now see the pairing of Mohd Fairuzizuan Mohd Tazari and Mohd Zakry Latif step up to get involved in the Olympic squad.

It has been decided that all the potential doubles teams will have to undergo a strenuous medical check up before the squad is announced to ensure that the BAM can have confidence in the players lasting through a gruelling tournament.

It is only natural that the association will want their best players to have every chance of competing for the medals but this extra delay and uncertainty may not be too welcome for the players involved. With only two Malaysian doubles teams being entered for the 2008 Olympic Games, this is a key decision which will be required to be made before the end of the month.

Wan Wah and his partner Tan Fook have past Olympic experience and their current seedings in the world ranking would suggest that they are the better team to clinch Olympic glory. However, with the injury casting doubt over the duo, the better decision may be made to allow the less fancied but in better condition team through to represent the nation.

Mohd Fairuzizuan Mohd Tazari and Mohd Zakry Latif played at the recent Thomas Cup and they managed to give a very good account of themselves during the tournament. The duo managed a straight games victory over Chinas second ranked duo in the Semi finals but sadly the Malaysian team lost 3-2 overall to a strong Chinese team.

However, this result indicates that every confidence can be placed on the Malaysian duo and if injury means that the pair will be involved then the team can still hope for a strong showing in Beijing.

Missing out on a major event like the Olympics because of an injury is a cruel and heart-breaking way to go but for every player who misses out, there is the excitement and pleasure for the player who forces his way into the squad to replace them.
