Malaysian Brothers All Set for Thomas Cup

Preparations for the Thomas Cup have been able to simmer along in the background due to all the focus on Olympic qualification.

With the recent May 1st deadline for Olympic hopefuls now past, all eyes are turning firmly towards the big tournament in Jakarta with the teams arriving to prepare for the tournament. The event starts on the 11th of May and although some minds will be thinking about the Olympics, this is one of the major badminton events of the year.

There are a lot of inclusions of interest for many of the countries and there are a few brothers taking part. There has already been discussion about the English team and the inclusion of the Adcock brothers but these two wont be the only sibling pair on show at the Thomas Cup.

The Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) has announced their squad and they too have a set of brothers in their pool. There used to be previous focus on the Hashim and Sidek brothers but now the attention is definitely on the Abdul Latif brothers.

This has come about due to the inclusion of Mohd Arif and the 19 year old is obviously delighted to be given this opportunity at such a young age. Many 19 year olds would be concerned about facing some of the best badminton players in the world but if called upon, he believes he will do himself and his team justice.

Sport is littered with stories of young stars coming out of nowhere and causing a major upset so there is no reason why the player should be overawed by the occasion. Given that the player has already made a name for himself this year with a high profile victory, there should be nothing to fear from the Thomas Cup. Chan Yan Kit was defeated in the Asian Badminton Championship's last week so current form is also on the side of the youngster at the moment.

Mohd Arif Abdul Latif and Mohd Zakry Abdul Latif will be joining up with the team that aims to make its mark in the event. Mohd Arif will line up in the singles section alongside Lee Chong Wei, Wong Choong Hann and Mohd Hafiz Hashim. Mohd Zakry will be making his Thomas Cup Finals debut in the Doubles event where he will be lining up alongside Mohd Fairuzizuan Mohd Tazrj.

The other doubles pairs are made up from the countries top badminton pairings, Choong Tan Fook and Lee Wan Wah with the other team comprising of Koo Kien Keat and Tan Boo Heong.

There is no doubt that there is a lot of hope and expectation on the Malaysian badminton team but there appears to be a strong blend of youthful enthusiasm with experience.

There are a number of teams who will be hoping for title success at the Thomas Cup but with an increased level of expectation and the sibling competitiveness that will drive them on, Malaysia could have an opportunity to bag the glory at the Thomas Cup.
