Malaysia's Wong Vows to Fight Back

Malaysia's leading female player Wong Mew Choo is determined to get through one of the most difficult spells in her career as she battles injuries and a lack of form.

Wong is expected to miss out on the National Grand Prix Finals, which is Malaysia's leading domestic competition, so that she can recover from injuries.

The 25-year-old is suffering pain in her heels and also has a knee injury. Although they have hampered her in the past months, Wong told local media that she will soldier on.

Wong said in The Star newspaper: "I intend to resume stem cell injection treatment on my knees. I stopped doing it because of my preparation for the Beijing Olympics as I needed to undergo intensive training.

"I will continue playing unless I am told I can no longer carry on. But now that the season is ending and I did not qualify for the Super Series Masters Finals, I want to use this period to undergo treatment. It's better for me to skip the National Grand Prix Finals as well."

Stem cell treatment can be lengthy and keep her out for a while. It requires receiving inoculations on a regular basis but the time between injections depends on how fast she is recovering.

The injuries have had a major impact on her as she struggles to regain the form that helped her to victory at the China Open last year.

Although she reached the semi-finals of the Malaysian and Singapore Opens, she has mostly suffered early-round defeats in other Super Series tournaments. She also reached the quarter-finals at the Beijing Olympics.

She said: "I am frustrated with my results and at times, I also doubt myself. How can I be dishing out rubbish like this? I felt sorry for the people who have placed hopes in me.

"Although I reached the last eight in the Olympics, I felt empty inside because I did not achieve my target to win a medal. Injuries prevented me from playing to my full ability in the Beijing Games."

The 10th-ranked Wong failed to reach the Grand Finals in Kota Kinabalu because she finished outside the top eight who qualify for the year-ending event.
