Misbun's Presence Boosts Chong Wei's Spirits

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 20 (Bernama) -- The presence of Datuk Misbun Sidek who sat in the coach's chair during the second round of the Proton Malaysian Open here Thursday night clearly fired up the spirits of national singles ace Datuk Lee Chong Wei.

Chong Wei who was up against Hu Yun of Hong Kong wasted no time in going on the offensive and made short work of his opponent winning in 21-6, 21-9 to advance to Friday's quarterfinal where he will meet Nguyen Tien Minh of Vietnam.

"I did not expect Misbun will come tonight. Now I am only thinking of doing my best to win this tournament," he told reporters after the match.

Chong Wei said he did not know whether Misbun had given an answer to the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) on continuing his services with BAM and hoped the matter would be resolved amicably between them.

Misbun has submitted his resignation as the chief singles coach but BAM has asked him to reconsider the decision.

Besides Chong Wei, national doubles pair Mohd Zakry Abdul Latif/Hoon Thien How also advanced to the quarterfinal after they beat Singapore pair Hendri Kurniawan Saputra/Chayut Triyachart 21-16, 21-15 and are scheduled to meet Naoki Kawamae/Shoji Sato of Japan.

Meanwhile, current national singles coach Rashid Sidek said Misbun's attendance Thursday night was not expected.

"When he came, he asked to sit in the coach's seat and I made way for him," he said.

Assistant coach Tey Seu Bock said he and Chong Wei had been phoning Misbun the last few days trying to persuade him to come (to the tournament).

"Yesterday also I had called him but he replied he was rather busy...I am pleasantly surprised that he came and sat beside me," he said.

Meanwhile, BAM honorary-secretary Ng Chin Chai said BAM had written to Misbun asking him to reconsider his quit decision.

"In the letter we also invited him to come and continue to be Chong Wei's coach at this Malaysian Open. His presence tonight shows he is giving a positive response," he said.
