Misbun's Resignation Due To Differences Over Coaching Approach, Says Ahmad Shabery

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 10 (Bernama) -- Datuk Misbun Sidek's decision to resign as national singles badminton coach was over coaching aspects and not personal, said Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek.

"After talking to Misbun, we found out that his decision to quit from the Badmininton Association of Malaysia (BAM) a day before the New Year, was based on differences in coaching approaches," he told reporters after chairing a Malaysia Games Supreme Council meeting, on Monday.

Ahmad Shabery said this conclusion was made based on a meeting with Misbun, BAM president Datuk Seri Mohd Nadzmi Salleh and National Sports Council director-general Datuk Zolkples Embong last night.

He said during the meeting, Mohd Nadzmi gave his views on the same issue and that he would bring up Misbun's grievances to the BAM exco meeting on Wednesday.

"It is up to the BAM exco to make a win-win decision that will not effect the sport as Misbun's contribution to the success of our badminton players are unquestionable," he said.

On rumours that Misbun and his protege, world number one national singles player Datuk Lee Chong Wei, have plans to set up a professional camp after they quit BAM, Ahmad Shabery said Misbun refuted such claims.

Meanwhile, the Malaysian Amateur Athletic Union (MAAU) has been asked to submit an application to the National Sports Council (NSC) before moving the venue for athletics training from the National Sports Complex in Bukit Jalil to the Ranau Sports Complex in Sabah.

Ahmad Shabery said many issues had come up, especially regarding the welfare of athletes, when MAAU decided to train in Ranau for preparations for the Sea Games in Indonesia this November.

"For example, most of the athletes are pursuing their studies in universities in the Klang Valley. If training is conducted full-time in Ranau, their studies will be disrupted," he said.

Earlier, he held a closed-door meeting with eight national athletes who expressed their disappointment over the move by MAAU.
