New Format For Sudirman Cup In China Next Year

KUALA LUMPUR, May 15 (Bernama) -- Badminton World Federation (BWF) has introduced a new format for the Sudirman Cup, adding another four teams in the grouping stage, from only eight teams previously.

The Sudirman Cup tournament will be held at Qingdao, China on May 22- 29, next year.

BWF chief operating officer Thomas Lund said about 50 teams were expected to participate in the world mixed team event held biennially.

"BWF added another four teams as compared to the last tournament where there are only eight groups in the top tier," he told a news conference today.

He said the changes in the format would enable countries with quality shuttlers to play at the international tournament.

The move was also one of the federation's efforts to help countries which needed support to expose their shuttlers worldwide, he said.

On why China was chosen to host the tournament, Lund said it was due to the Great Wall's capabilities in hosting the event.

"We are impressed with the facilities and hospitality provided by China during the last Sudirman Cup tournament," he told reporters after the BWF annual general meeting here today.

China hosted the Sudirman Cup in Guangzhou last year and the host country beat Korea 3-0 in the final.

On another development, BWF agreed today to extend the tenure of their headquarters in Malaysia until 2013, as agreed by the Malaysian Government.
