NSAs Must Handle Issues With Care - Ahmad Shabery

SHAH ALAM, Jan 4 (Bernama) -- National Sports Associations (NSAs) must handle sensitive issues carefully so that athletes would not be affected by such decisions said Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Ahmad Shabery Cheek.

"If possible, we (Youth and Sports Ministry) do not want to interfere in decisions made by sports associations but the government has the right to know the reasons or issues involved...we do not want certain decisions to hamper the development of sports in the country," he said.

He was commenting on the decision by the Malaysian Karate Federation (Makaf) to terminate the services of national karate coach P. Arivalagan after his term expired on Dec 31 and the issue of national badminton coach Datuk Misbun Sidek's resignation on Friday.

In the case of Misbun, Ahmad Shabery said he was trying to find a solution when handling the issue.

"I will wait until Badminton Association of Malaysia president Datuk Nadzmi Mohd Salleh returns from abroad. Thus far we only have one system - all players and coaches must follow the BAM system - so we may find a liberal system to allow players or coaches to have their own system," he said.

Meanwhile, in the case of Arivalagan, Ahmad Shabery said he would direct the National Sports Council (NSC) to submit a report.

"Last year, karate was among sports that showed good development and excellent results at the Guangzhou Asian Games, winning two gold medals.

"So when there is an issue, we want to know if the employment of a foreign coach was done for the good of the sport or was there other factors involved," he said.
