Perlis Dangle Cash Incentives For Medal Winners

KANGAR, June 3 (Bernama) -- Perlis are offering cash incentives for athletes and coaches who win medals at the 13th SUKMA in Melaka, ranging from RM1,000 to RM3,000.

Perlis Youth and Sports Committee chairman Abdul Jamil Saad said gold medal winners at the SUKMA would receive RM3,000 cash, silver medal RM2,000 and bronze RM1,000.

According to Abdul Jalil, teams that win gold medals in team events, would receive RM6,000, RM5,000 (silver) and RM4,000 (bronze) under the incentive scheme.

"The Perlis state government will also offer cash incentives for coaches whose athletes win gold, silver or bronze. Coaches of gold medal winners will receive RM2,000, silver RM1,000 and bronze RM500," he told reporters after hosting a dinner for coaches and team managers here Wednesday night.

He added that apart from the main incentives, athletes would also receive instant cash rewards after their respective events are completed and the results announced at the respective venues.

Instant cash rewards of RM200 for a gold, RM150 for silver and RM100 for bronze would be awarded to individual winners while team event medal winners would receive RM2,000 (gold), RM1,500 (silver) and RM1,000 for bronze.

Coaches stand to win instant cash rewards of RM150 (gold), RM100 (silver) and RM50 (bronze).

Abdul Jamil was confident that the cash incentives would help spur the Perlis contingent, comprising 316 athletes, to give their best during the SUKMA hosted by Melaka from June 10-19.

He added that Perlis athletes would compete in 29 of the 33 sports hosted.

Meanwhile, the Selangor badminton team to the SUKMA, are hoping that their back players would rise to the occasion to contribute medals from the sport.

Selangor SUKMA badminton coach Abd Rani Mohd Nasir said Selangor's gold medals hopes would hinge on Woon Khee Wei/Chong Sook Chin in the women's doubles.

"Woon was in the national team that beat Indonesia to win the gold medal at the Laos SEA Games. I am also hoping that players like Zulfadli Zulkifli and national coach Datuk Misbun Sidek's son, Misbun Ramadan Misbun will rise to the occasion," he told Bernama.
