Rashid Won't Follow Misbun's Footsteps

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 14 (Bernama) -- National badminton head coach Rashid Sidek has no plans to follow his elder brother Datuk Misbun Sidek's footsteps to walk out of the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM).

Rashid said he was comfortable with BAM and hoped to continue his career as a coach in the BAM fold.

"The BAM has made a decision and we will wait for a reply from Misbun," he told Bernama.

When asked of national singles ace Datuk Lee Chong Wei's decision to follow Misbun, Rashid said whatever decision made by Chong Wei would be his own.

"Let him make the decision and whatever decision he makes will be his own. We will not try to influence or convince his decision," said Rashid.

According to Rashid, Chong Wei was now performing consistently and mentally would not be affected by the Misbun issue (Misbun's decision to not extend his contract with BAM that expired on Dec 31).

"Chong Wei is now even more inspired after the Super Series Masters Final win in Taiwan recently. Now his focus will be on the Malaysian Open where he will start as the defending champion," he said.

Apart from Chong Wei, Hafiz Hashim and Chong Wei Feng will be among men's singles players who will be competing in the Malaysian Open Super Series from Jan 18 to 23.

Hafiz has been drawn to face Chen Long of China in his first match while Wei Feng need to come through the qualifying stage to make the 'main draw'.

Meanwhile, National Sports Council (NSC) director-general Datuk Zolkples Embong hoped Misbun would consider place the need of the country first before making any decision.

"BAM are still waiting for a decision from Misbun. I hope he (Misbun) will take the country's need into consideration," he said.

Badminton is among sports placed under the Road to London 2012 programme aimed at winning the country's first ever gold medal at the 2012 London Olympics.

Misbun who had been coaching Chong Wei, was expected to help the world number one to realise that dream.
