Rasmussen and Wang Suffer Shock Defeats

Rasmussen, the All England champion and seeded sixth, fell in three games to Indonesia's Maria Kristin Yulianti, 18-21, 21-19, 21-14, in an epic 57-minute encounter.

Wang, seeded fourth, was sent packing by India's unseeded Saina Nehwal, who won 21-19, 11-21, 21-11 in 52 minutes.

Rasmussen's loss was the bigger shock because it came against someone ranked 21 in the world, compared to the Dane's fourth-ranking.

Nehwal, at 15th in the world, gave up nine places to the sixth-ranked Wang, who fought back well after dropping the first game.

Howeve,r Nehwal stormed to a 6-0 lead in the deciding set, an advantage that Wang was unable to pull back.

The two giant-killers now face each other in the quarter-finals with a place in the last four at stake.

Defending Olympic champion and second-seeded Zhang Ning, of China, cruised into the quarter-finals with a 21-11, 21-12 victory over South Korea's Jun Jae-youn.

She took only 34 minutes to beat her opponent and set up a clash with France's Pi Hongyan, the fifth seed who defeated Japan's Eriko Hirose 21-12, 16-21, 21-6.

Earlier, in the first round, Zhang had beaten Thailand's Ponsana Salakjit 21-23, 21-17, 21-7 while Jun had eliminated Ireland's Maggie Choe 21-12, 21-14.

China's top seed Xie Xingfang advanced to the last 16 by beating Taiwan's Cheng Shao-chieh 21-1, 21-9.

She then beat Belarussian youngster Olga Konon 21-16, 21-15 to move into the last eight. Germany's Xu Huaiwen is the one who stands between Xie and a place in the semi-finals after she beat Britain's Tracey Hallam 21-10, 21-7.

Third-seeded Chinese woman Lu Lan will meet Malaysia's eighth seed Wong Mew Choo. Lu had little trouble seeing off Canada's Anna Rice 21-17, 21-12 while Wong was also hardly stretched as she beat Bulgaria's Petya Nedelcheva 21-16, 21-8.

Going back to the very first round, Nigerian hope Grace Daniel, who had high hopes of a good run at Beijing, fell in her opening match, going down to the Czech Republic's Kristina Ludikova 21-13, 21-8.
