RI youth shuttlers stopped in the semifinals
Badminton star Lee Chong Wei of Malaysia has been appointed as a United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) goodwill ambassador.
Despite failing to advance to the finals, Indonesian youth shuttlers improved their mixed-team performance at the semifinalists of the ongoing Asia Youth Under-19 Championship in Bukit Kiara, Kuala Lumpur, on Tuesday.
Last year, Indonesia lost 0-3 to China in the quarterfinals.
Indonesia lost 2-3 to China on Tuesday's mixed-team event semifinals, thus letting badminton juggernaut China advance to the finals to face host Malaysia on Wednesday - a repeat of last year's finale.
In the semis, defending champion Malaysia defeated Thailand 3-1.
"Comparing our performance this year with last year, I believe our youth team has played to their maximum capacity,"Badminton Association of Indonesia (PBSI) secreatary-general, Jacob Rusdianto, said Tuesday.
The Indonesian team managed to overcome China in the men's singles and doubles sectors, but was crushed in the women's singles and doubles and the mixed doubles.
Men's singles player Evert Sukamta defeated Cai Ruiqing 21-16, 21-14 in 17 minutes, while men's doubles Jones Ralfi Jansen/Dandi Prabudita overcome Li Gen/So Ziwei in a 50-minute rubber-game battle of 21-18, 14-21, 21-18.
Women's singles competitor Renna Suwarno, surrendered 13-21, 14-21 to Suo Di, while Della Destiara Haris paired with her women's doubles partner Suci Rizki Andini lost 12-21, 17-21 to Tang Jinhua/Xia Huan.
Della, who also played in the mixed doubles with Ricky Karanda Suward, could not handle Liu Cheng/Bao Yixin and lost 19-21, 19-21.
Indonesia advanced to the semifinals as it came out as the Group E champion after beating Mongolia and Vietnam 5-0.
"Hopefully, we can have a champion in the individual event competition. I believe all sectors have equal chance of winning the title,"said Jacob.
After the mixed-team finale on Wednesday, the championship will continue with the individual event competition, which runs until March 28.
Last year, Indonesian youth shuttlers Angga Pratama/Yohanes Rendy Sugiarto snatched the champion title in the men's doubles sector, while in 2007, Richie Puspita Dili/Debby Susanto won the women's doubles title.
The tournament also serves as a continental qualifier prior to the final qualifier at the World Junior Championships in Guadalajara,
Mexico, from April 16-25, for the Youth Olympic Games in Singapore in August.
