Rosmah Calls For More Sport Facilities In Putrajaya

Badminton star Lee Chong Wei of Malaysia has been appointed as a United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) goodwill ambassador.

PUTRAJAYA, May 9 (Bernama) -- Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor, wife of the prime minister, called on the Putrajaya Corporation to provide more sport facilities, especially badminton courts, here.

Rosmah, who is the patron of the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM), said having more sport infrastructures would not only inculcate the sporting culture among Putrajaya dwellers but also make Putrajaya a potential host to national and international badminton championships, offering an alternative to the Putra Stadium in Bukit Jalil, Kuala Lumpur.

"In other words, it will help promote Putrajaya not only as the government's administrative centre, but also as a world-class sports centre and a must-see tourist destination," she said when opening the Putrajaya Junior and Community Badminton Championship 2010 at Community Complex in Precinct 11, here on Sunday.

About 500 participants are taking part in the three-day championship jointly-organised by the Putrajaya Corporation and the Putrajaya Badminton Association.

Rosmah said apart from improving health and promoting good relationship among the community, being active in sports could also prevent teenagers from getting involve in unhealthy activities like illegal racing and drug abuse.

Meanwhile, Rosmah called on Malaysians to pledge undivided support to the national badminton squad at the Thomas and Uber Cup finals which began Sunday.

"Let us pray that our long wait to win back the Thomas Cup will come to an end this time around," she said.

The last time Malaysia won the prestigious Cup was in 1992.
