Rosmah Promises Players Reward If They Win Thomas, Uber Cups

KUALA LUMPUR, May 6 (Bernama) -- National badminton players competing in the Thomas Cup and Uber Cup tournaments beginning Sunday can expect a reward if they win the championships.

Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) patron Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor, who is wife of the prime minister, promised a reward if they lift the trophies.

"God willing, there will be a reward for the players if they win. We will discuss this with the prime minister," she said after closing the Thomas-Uber Cup one million signatures campaign, here.

Rosmah said the players should not face any hindrance to playing well as the arrears in their payment had been settled with a RM2-million allocation from the government to the BAM.

"I was informed that they are in satisfactory health and I notice that they are in high spirits. I believe they have prepared themselves to play well," she said.

Earlier, Rosmah spent time chatting with the nation's Thomas Cup and Uber Cup teams who were present at the event.

The prestigious championships are scheduled from Sunday to May 16 at the Putra Stadium in Bukit Jalil.

On another matter, Rosmah said a study should be made on the widespread abandoning of newborn babies in the country to come up with effective measures to resolve the problem.

"We should not hurl accusations at the parents of such babies. We have to study their background and find out why they were forced into such a predicament. There could be certain pressing reasons," she said.
