Sports Activities To Be Included In Student Performance Record

SEOUL, Jan 28 (Bernama) -- The culture and education ministries said Friday they will have elementary, middle and high schools include students' extracurricular sports activities in their performance records and make them count in admissions to higher schools, Yonhap news agency reported.

Teachers will record the sports clubs each student participates in, the games played and how the students contributed to the results of the matches, officials said.

The plan was jointly announced by the Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Sports, and the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, as part of efforts to promote athleticism among students and school sports club leagues.

The ministries said they will recommend high schools and colleges to take account of the records in screening students for admission.

The plan also calls for expanding school sports leagues from the current four to 10 sporting events to include football, baseball, basketball, badminton, softball, table tennis, handball, dodge ball, gymnastics and jump rope.

The teams will recruit amateur students and compete on weekends, holidays and weekdays after school.

Players registered as athletes with the Korean Olympic Committee will not be allowed to join the clubs, officials said.

According to the education ministry, 37.6 percent of students are presently participating in sports activities.
