Star-Studded Field Expected At Asia Championships In Delhi

NEW DELHI, March 26 (Bernama) -- Eight of the world's top 20 shuttlers, including China's Lin Dan and Indonesia's Taufik Hidayat are expected to feature in the Yonex-Sunrise Badminton Asia Championships next month.

Over 300 players from 21 countries, including Malaysia, will take part in the championships that offers total prize money of US$150,000 (RM525,000) in the men's and women's individual events.

"This tournament is the world's second biggest individual championships behind the world championships. It will be a top quality tournament and the world's best players have confirmed their participation," V.K. Verma, president of Badminton Association of India, told the media on Friday.

However, Malaysia's Datuk Lee Chong Wei, who won the All England title earlier this month, would not be in Delhi.

Hafiz Hashim, the 2002 Commonwealth Games champion and 2009 India Open runner up, is likely to lead the Malaysian charge.

In the women's category, world champion Lu Lan of China, Hong Kong's Zhou Mi, the bronze medallist at the 2004 Olympic Games and Maria Kristin Yulianti, another bronze medal winner at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, have confirmed their entries.

India's own rising star, Saina Nehwal, currently ranked fifth in the world, would be heading the local challenge.

The fourth edition of the Asia championship would be held at the newly built Siri Fort Badminton Stadium in Delhi from April 12 to 18.
