Sweet Revenge For Mohamad Arif In Sukma Shuttle Tussle
MELAKA, June 18 (Bernama) -- It was sweet revenge for Mohamad Arif Abdul Latif of Negeri Sembilan when he took down Chong Wei Feng of Kedah in the men's singles badminton final of the 13th Melaka Sukma at the Ayer Keroh Mini Stadium on Friday.
This is the fourth battle between the two national badminton camp sparring partners in the Sukma final since 2004 and in at the last Sukma in Terengganu, Chong defeated Mohamad Arif for the gold.
This time, Mohamad Arif, who is from Seremban, held the edge with a more energetic game to beat Chong 21-11, 23-25 and 21-16 to set the personal score between them at 2-2.
"I was more confident this time. I came down as underdog so there is less pressure for me," he said after the match.
The atmosphere in the stadium, heightened by the presence of of hundreds of Kedah and Negeri Sembilan supporters, did not lack drama.
During the rubber set, amid jeers from the crowd, Mohamad Arif was given a yellow card by umpire Mohd Azmi Osman for flinging his racket onto the court.
"I was frustrated because I could not take the simple shot," he said.
In the men's doubles, Teo Kok Siang and Tan Wee Kiong won gold for Johor after easily beating Yew Hong Kheng and Chan Peng Soon of Penang 21-8, 21-18.
In the women's competition, Tee Jing Yi of Pulau Pinang took home the singles gold by defeating S.Stephanie Shalini from Wilayah Persekutuan 21-17, 12-21, 21-12.
In the doubles, sisters Ng Hui Lin and Hui Ern of Negeri Sembilan beat Selangor's Chong Sook Chin and Woon Khe Wei 21-16, 14-21, 21-13.
