Thailand Open Grand Prix Gold 2012 (4th- 10th Jun 2012)
Ace Indian shuttler Saina Nehwal got a shot in the arm ahead of next month's Olympics as she lifted the Thailand Open Grand Prix Gold title after rallying to beat Thailand's Ratchanok Inthanon in the final of the event in Bangkok.
The 22-year-old world number five Indian beat Inthanon 19-21 21-15 21-10 at the C U Sport Complex in Bangkok for her second title of the year after the Swiss Open win in March.
The win will come as a massive boost to Saina's confidence ahead of Olympics in July-August.
The biggest upset would be the match between Sony Dwi Kuncoro vs Lin Dan in the semifinals.
Indonesia’s in-form male shuttler Sony Dwi Kuncoro delivered a staggering performance and created the biggest upset by defeating the ruling Olympic and World Champion Lin Dan of China in semi-final encounter at Thailand Open GP Gold 2012 at Bangkok, Thailand, on Saturday, June 9.
The World Number 65 Kuncoro, who is un-seeded in the tournament, put up fabulous show of top class badminton and remained successful in beating the World Number 2 Lin who was the top seed in Men’s Singles draw of Thailand Open.
The lower ranked Indonesian, who has been struggling hard to get rid of injuries for the last couple of years, showed that he is back on track and is ready to beat whoever he finds on the opposite side of net.
On the other hand, Lin was shocked with the severe treatment that he received from his lower ranked Indonesian opponent. He could not dominate the pace at the crucial stages in the match and lost to Kuncoro without showing a strong character.
Sony Dwi Kuncoro triumphed at the Thailand Grand Prix Gold Badminton Open by defeating Chinese Chen Yuekun 21-17 and 21-14 in the final match on Sunday, marking his comeback after recovering from a series of injuries.
Sony, who was not chosen to represent Indonesia at the all-male Thomas Cup team event, is the only Indonesian player to capture a title in the US$120,000 event.
The victory of the 2004 Olympic bronze medalist against Lin Dan was underrated by several commentators, who deemed that the Chinese surrendered to the Indonesian deliberately to give his younger compatriot an easier opponent in the final.
