Thomas Cup: Nigerian Team 'Missing On Air'
KUALA LUMPUR, May 9 (Bernama) -- The Badminton World Federation (BWF) is still in dark on the fate of the Nigerian Thomas Cup team, who should have arrived here at 2.15 pm today, but failed to show-up for the opening group B match against Malaysia at 6 pm today.
BWF Chief Operating Officer (COO) Thomas Lund said the Thomas Cup African qualifiers should have arrived at the KL International Airport (KLIA) at 2.15pm today but they failed to show-up.
"Then we heard that they might have missed the earlier flight, or the flight originally from Dubai had technical problems and was delayed. Now we hear that they will arrive here at 9.35 pm. We've to wait," he told reporters, here Sunday.
A check by Bernama on the Emirates website found that if the Nigerians had taken the flight from Dubai International Airport to KLIA, it would take seven hours to reach here and there were two flights today to Kuala Lumpur.
The first flight should have taken off at 3.15am and would have arrived KLIA at 2.15 pm while the other flight at 10.20 am and arrive here at 9.25pm.
Three of the Nigerian officials who did not want to be named were also surprised their players were missing.
"We took the flight from Doha, Qatar while the players from Dubai, UAE. They should arrive here earlier than us but failed to show-up. We also want to know where they went missing," one of the official said.
