Vietnam's Nguyen Stars in Home Event

Vietnam's top player Nguyen Tien Minh boosted his confidence ahead of the Olympic Games in Beijing by winning the Robot Vietnam Challenge in Ho Chi Minh City over the weekend.

Although not an elite Super Series event, it is a victory nevertheless and will put Nguyen in a positive frame of mind as he prepares for the Olympics in August.

The world number 27 defeated Malaysia's 81st-ranked Chong Wei Feng 17-21, 21-10, 26-24 in a tough battle to the delight of the home crowd, according to Vietnam Net Bridge News.

Nguyen can also be pleased with his victory because he had to go through some tough matches to lift the title and justify his top seeding.

In the semi-finals, he also had to come from behind to beat Thailand's Saensomboonsuk Tanongsak, ranked 57 in the world, 14-21, 21-13, 21-15.

Then in the final, he saved three successive match points in the final game before finally consigning Chong to defeat.

Malaysian team manager How Kim Tho told local media that Chong was heartbroken after the defeat.

"It should have been Wei Feng's day. He lost a little focus after the interval of the deciding game and found difficulties to adapt to the draught in the hall. Tien Minh enjoyed good support from his home fans and it was encouraging to see Wei Feng putting up a great fight," said How.

Chong, seeded fourth in the tournament, also had a difficult last four assignment against India's Anand Chetan before emerging with a 19-21, 21-10, 21-16 victory.

In the women's singles, Malaysia's Lydia Cheah was able to get rid of her choker's tag by winning her first international title.

She beat Taiwanese player Hung Shih-han 22-20, 21-15 in the final as Malaysia also took the men's doubles and mixed doubles title.

Hong Chieng Hun and Ng Kean Kok won the men's doubles while Lim Khim Wah and Ng Hui Lin took the mixed doubles crown.

The women's doubles title was won by Singapore, through Liu Fan and Neo Yu Yan.

The Vietnamese tournament, worth US$15,000, is not part of the main Super Series circuit where the leading players compete but provides lower-ranked players a chance to grab some glory.
