Wang Shixian Clinches Women's Singles Title

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 23 (Bernama) -- China's Wang Shixian overcame a strong challenge from team-mate Wang Yihan to clinch the women's singles title at the Badminton Proton Malaysia Open Super Series 2011 at the Putra Stadium, Bukit Jalil here Sunday.

Fresh from her victory at the Taiwan Super Series two weeks ago, Wang Shixian, 21, was modest about defeating Wang Yihan 21-18, 21-14 as she had two more championships uppermost in her mind to enable her to qualify for the London Olympics in 2012.

"I don't feel that I am one of the best players in China as we have many players in the world's top 10.

"I need to compete in more championships in two years to qualify for the olympics. Ironically, Chinese players have to compete with one another and our capabilities are not much different," Wang Shixian (world's number two) told reporters after the final.

She said Wang Yihan (world's number one) could beat her in another tournament as they knew each other strengths and weaknesses.

On her victory tonight, Wang Shixian said she was in a hurry to finish the second game as she wanted to catch a flight for the Korean Open.

"As a result I made several errors and conceded several points to Yihan before I came back into the game," said Wang Shixian.

In men's doubles, China's Chai Biao and Guo Zhendong took 40 minutes to humble Denmark's Mads Conrads-Petersen and Jonas Rasmussen 21-16, 21-14 to win the men's doubles title.

For the Chinese pair, who partnered each other for only the second time, they walked away with US$31,600 (RM96,696).

"The game today was very interesting as we faced Rasmussen, a season campaigner.

"However, I could see that he was not jell with Conrads, who is still new and they could not harness into each other patterns of play. I understand that they are playing together for the first time," said Chai Biao, who partnered Nan Zhang before.

Chai Biao said he partnered Zhendong for the first time at the Hong Kong Open Super Series last December and managed to make it only into the quarter-finals.

"Yes, we are compatible now and hopefully, we will maintain our combination at the Victor Premier Korea Super Series next week," he said.
