Winning Thomas Cup Is Not A One Man Mission - Misbun

KUALA LUMPUR, March 29 (Bernama) -- The country's mission to recapture the Thomas Cup cannot be accomplished by the country's top most player Datuk Lee Chong Wei alone, said national singles coach Datuk Misbun Sidek.

It requires a collective effort from all the relevant authorities, including players, coaches, Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) and the National Sports Council (NSC).

Misbun said the Thomas Cup and Uber Cup competitions are team events, as such, all players must fulfill their duties and commitments to contribute points towards achieving that goal.

"In a team event, the country's number singles player will face the number one singles player of the opponent, number two against number two and number three against the number three.

"Similarly, the first doubles will play against the opponent's first double. So the role of every player in important and they must play their part effectively," he told Bernama here Monday.

However, Misbun acknowledged that Chong Wei, being the world number one and All England champion, would be looked up as the person who can provide the inspiration for others.

"Normally every country will have an icon to provide the inspiration...for example Lin Dan for China, Peter Gade for Denmark and Boonsak Ponsana for Thailand.

"Our icon is Chong Wei and we need to look after him well. If not there won't be any special focus on Malaysia," he said.

As for preparations for the Thomas and Uber Cup finals to be held here from May 9 to 16, Misbun said the training programme was progressing according to plans.

"We have a 'player all-year round' programme. For the Thomas and Uber Cup competitions we will select the best and train together and I am happy with the progress so far," he said.

"I know all the players are working hard to lift the status of the country's badminton and that provides inspiration for me to continue training them, especially Chong Wei because in one era, there can only be one legend and one number one player."
